Okay, first, about the weapons. Sure, we might get a max damage weapon around the time we hit the level cap, but it's more than likely to be a white weapon with overly-high requirements (10+). If we want a max-damage weapon, with at least a 15^50 mod (the simplest I can think of), that also doesn't have a requirement in the nose-bleed area, then we have to farm for it.
Kaining center weapon crafters you might say? First of all, they are 5 plat each to craft. Then material costs anywhere from 500g-1k for the base materials, plus a secondary material cost of 200g-1.5k range. What this means is that we either: 1. grind for a decent weapon, or 2. grind for the materials/gold to buy a decent weapon. Keep in mind, as well, that you have the costs of armor (1.5 per piece + materials, minimum 7.5k in gold alone for a full set), and the costs of skills that you have to save up for as well.
Collector weapons, I found (and this is something I had to learn but should be taught or communicated to the masses) just keep 5 of every monster drop until you move on to the next major "region" to get the cool weapons from the collectors. Most of the time you have enough to with out actively farming for monster drops.

The BIG problems was the orginal GW gave you sub-par collectors items until you were in the southern shiverpeeks and by then a lot of people assumed they just were sucky versions (following the same theme that ascalon region had). In factions.. it's finding the blasted collector's in the sea of read dots. (mind you original gw had them spread out but didn't have the "cramped" monster area).

One thing I let new players know is keep your monster drops and look out for the collectors until you move to the next region (differnet drops) and let them know to refrence guildwiki as to what you are looking for (so they know exactly what they can get and what drops to save if you don't want to keep them all).

I'm thinking, through many tangential responses by the ANet staff, that they realize they've fostered some discontentment and alienation with many of the mechanics of Factions (as evidenced by some of the quotes from this GameSpy article), and they realized that they've messed up Factions in many regards (this isn't my opinion outright, it's just my interpretation of Anet's responses to criticisms of Factions). I have hope they'll make Nightfall with this in mind.
